Sunless

As sure as night follows day
The rituals of the sun and the moon
In frivolous flight across the sky
Cause the sunrise and the sunset
The endless tides of the human heart.

And in between the moon and sun
The earth stands interposed
Controlled and in control,
Illuminated and in shadow,
Giving its own small light,
Receiving some
Passing through darkness into darkness.

The sun shines
The sun goes down
While we may doubt ourselves
Or our destinies
We expect another day to break.

Then in our interlocked conjunctions
Comes a time of shadow
When the sun or moon eclipsed
Gives us time to think on darkness
Unrestrained by diurnal motions
Nor by the seasons
Nor the geometries of space.

The continuity of our lives
Like the lives of the stars
Is a long, round cycle of beginnings and ends.
One day is over, another dawn begins;
The tides rise and fall;
Summer warms us
Autumn brings fruition before twilight
Winter lays its cold hand,
Spring returns with hope.
